On the last day of May, 1911 Portman Road played host to a Boy Scout Rally. Principal guest on the day was Lord Kitchener a keen supporter of the scouting movement and who, just a few years later, would be appointed Secretary of State for War and hence the face on the much imitated ‘KITCHENER WANTS YOU’ poster. The Portman Road grandstand (there was just the one back then) was packed to the rafters with VIP’s who were treated to displays of first aid, swordstick and ju-jitsu (although – thinking back to my scouting days – possibly not in that order). Kitchener appears in this postcard fourth left centre in a blue serge suit and bowler hat.
