Saracen’s Head

Listed Buildings in Ipswich: No 25 Saracen’s Head

Saracen’s Head

Adjacent to St Margaret’s Church is the old Saracen’s Head public house, now the Saracen’s House business centre, a 16th to 17th century timber-framed structure. A few yards in front of the building, and standing in what would have once been the centre of St Margaret’s Green, is a plaque that tells the story of the immediate area. For some 500 years from the 12th or 13th Century until 1844 the annual ‘Holy Rood Fair’ was held here in late September, an event that was famed for the sale of cheese, butter, sweatmeats and sausages.
