16-09-1981 Chicago Sting 2 San Diego Sockers 1 (NASL Play-Off Semi-Final Game 2) Comiskey Park, Chicago, Illinois
Football and life wise 1981 was something of a zenith for your truly. Bobby Robson and his “Boys of ’81” lifted the UEFA Cup at the end of what was an epic season that – with a tad more luck and a slightly stronger squad – could have ended with a unique treble of League Championship, FA Cup and UEFA Cup.
In September I was transferred to corporate HQ in Chicago and by a very happy coincidence this was at the same time as the Chicago Sting were about to clinch the NASL Championship for the first time.
Heady days in both Suffolk and Chicago.
My first Sting game was game two of the playoff semi-finals, a 2-1 win for the Chicagoans and (second) love at first sight for me (a sort of footballing mistress if you like to my ITFC wife). The Sting won the Soccer Bowl in a famous victory over the New York Cosmos a few weeks later and I would go on to become a regular (and season ticket holder) at their outdoor and indoor games for the next five years.
On these pages over the coming months I will be penning a Chicago Sting history for your entertainment (and may well update the threadbare looking Wikipedia article on the Sting at the same time) – so “Stay Tuned” as they say.
