No 25 (in a series of several): Serhij Perkhun (1977 – 2001)

Goalkeeper Serhij Perkhun became the first and only player in the history of the professional game in Russia to die from injuries sustained in an officially recognised match. Just four days after being capped for the first time by his native Ukraine, Serhij collided head on with striker Budun Budunov while tending goal for CSKA Moscow in their home fixture with FC Anzhi Makhachkala. His injuries were first thought to be fairly minor – a broken nose – but after the game he went into a coma and died nine days later, on August 28, 2001, from a brain hemorrhage. This statue was erected in his memory in his home city of Dnipropetrowsk.
