No 5: The Liquidator – Harry J Allstars (1969)
Shortly after its release in 1969 the Chelsea team would emerge from the Stamford Bridge players tunnel with ‘The Liquidator‘ blasting out over the PA system. A Jamaican reggae instrumental, the song was recorded by the Harry J Allstars a number of whose members would later team up with Bob Marley and the Wailers.
The name of the song comes from the 1964 pulp fiction novel by John Gardner at a time when pulp fiction/American trash culture was a common source for band names/song titles in Jamaica.
Despite the ‘gentrification’ of Chelsea in the intervening years, and other clubs such as Wolves, West Brom and Wycombe Wanderers all laying a claim to the track, it is still being played at Stamford Bridge forty years later.
